2008 Workshops

Workshops will be available for people to attend at the 2008 Omaha Peace and Justice Expo.  Below is a list of the workshops that will be offered.

10 a.m.-11 a.m.

"Understanding the Crisis in Iraq:  1914-2008" - Jeffrey Weiss presents an educational look at Iraq's 20th century.  This workshop will highlight how long ago the Iraq crisis started and just what has led to the war and problems of the 21st century.

"Palestine Under the Israeli Occupation" - Sam and Lois Selkaly

Nonviolent Communication workshop led by Jack Dunn

"So You Want to Make a Difference in Washington from Omaha:  RESULTS works to 'create champions for ending poverty'" (also offered at 3:30) - led by keynote speaker Sam Daley-Harris, president and founder of RESULTS (an organization dedicated to mass educational strategies to generate the will to end world hunger)

11 a.m.-12 p.m.

"Copwatch" - Willie Hamilton presents a workshop on how to organize effective community policing.  Copwatch focuses on resources for fighting police misconduct and strategies and techniques to combat police abuse, brutality, harassment, and corruption.

"Introduction to Theatre of the Oppressed" - Doug Paterson, professor of theatre at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, presents an interactive workshop involving participants in elements and practice of the Theatre of the Oppressed.

2:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m.

"Peace for our Teenagers:  Confronting Military Recruiters in our High Schools" - Jeffrey Weiss will present a workshop on counter recruitment strategies for high school students and concerned parents.  This is an excellent and important workshop for anyone who is, has, or knows a high school aged person.

Microcredit Lending workshop led by Juan Diego Center

"How America can Achieve Complete Liberation from Fossil Fuels" - Peter Salter

Workshop led by the Nebraska Innocence Project

3:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m.

"Bullying and Mobbing:  Is it Happening in Your Own Playground?" - Charmayne Harper will address the subject of bullying and mobbing and "control".  An important workshop that will present a description of the disease of bullying and how it affects the economics of groups.  Answers how we can deal with the situation of bullying and presents evidence of how bullying hints at a larger societal issue.  Addreses how we can create a change in others consciousness through the right questions.

"Gathering of Eagles" - A video presentation that documents how people from tribal and non-tribal backgrounds come together to honor Mother Earth and heal together by breaking down barriers through education, fellowship ceremonies, prayer meditation, and drumming together with speakers from Elders Native from different nations.
